Non Surgical Spinal Decompression
Non Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) is a non-invasive treatment for chronic back pain and neck pain from disc and facet joint disease. NSSD is an effective and safe procedure without any of the risks associated with surgery, injections, or anesthesia. Time off work or in recovery is minimal, and resolution of symptoms can be long lasting. A new study published in 2008 showed that patients had significantly improved pain and disability scores at end of treatment, at 30 days and at 180 days post-discharge.
Low back pain has become one of the most significant medical problems in today’s world. The statistics on the magnitude of the problem are overwhelming, and the number of chronic back cases continues to grow each day. In fact, low back pain that is related to work is the most common complaint presented to primary care physicians and workers compensation. NSSD can relieve the pain associated with herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, posterior facet syndrome and radicular (nerve root) pain of the low back and neck. Patients can avoid the merry-go-round of drugs and non-specific treatments that lead to years of debilitating pain and further spinal degeneration.
Bulging discs, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, pinched nerves, sciatica, and arm pain or leg pain can often be attributed to your spine asserting pressure on your discs. Poor posture, bad body mechanics, repetitive stress and acute injury can cause your vertebrae to compress your discs or to slip out of alignment which then applies pressure to your discs.
Compressed discs lead to two major problems: a bulge or herniation pressing on a nerve; and brittleness of the disc. The problem is often perpetuated because the compressed disc restricts the flow of nutrients to itself which is needed to heal.
A basic understanding of how decompression works can be explained with a little bit of anatomy. The disc is comprised of two components. If you think of a jelly donut the jelly is the part in the center called the nucleus. It is filled with a gel type of substance which is water based. The outer layer is called the annulus which is extremely tough and fibrous. When the disc is healthy it acts like an exercise ball giving bounce and spring to the disc.
When the disc is injured it’s like taking a knife to the exercise ball, the air is let out and the bounce is gone. The injured disc loses the water content of the nucleus and the disc starts to flatten losing its ability to function. In more severe cases the nucleus starts to push out of the disc and creates either a bulging disc or even worse a herniated disc.
Traditional corrective treatments include surgery or chiropractic adjustment. Spinal Decompression Therapy is an FDA approved treatment option that has shown excellent results.
Spinal Decompression Treatment is non-invasive and provides gentle decompression of the disc through the use of a decompression table. You are strapped to the table so that as it moves it applies a distraction force to the targeted area of the spine (the compressed disc). A computer controls the distraction force which is applied in between periods of relaxation. This gently pulls the spine elongating it and creating a small vacuum between the vertebrae which pulls the disc back into shape. The LSD acts to create a vacuum in the disc thereby causing the material that was bulged or herniated to suck back into the disc. The treatment is painless and most patients sleep during the procedure
A good analogy is to think of an accordion. When you pull on the accordion you increase the volume inside the bellows decreasing the pressure compared to the outside air. The effect created a situation where the air is sucked into the bellows to equalize the pressure.
During spinal decompression, a vacuum is created in the disc by the force of the decompression machine and body responds by sucking fluid back into the disc causing rehydration. The decompression works in very minute increments. But over time that adds up and lets the disc reshape itself, and heal.

Spinal Decompression cannot be performed on patients who have had spinal fusions with metal plates and screws, patients who are pregnant, have severe osteoporosis, cancer of the spine, infections of the spine or disc, and who are extremely obese.
